ice cream anti-social

Is it just me, or has the world become completely anti-social? Why doesn’t anyone want to talk anymore? Is it because it is so much easier to hide behind a computer screen and ‘network’ via facebook, myspace, linkedin, etc etc? Don’t get me wrong, I love facebook, but as a society, we seem to have lost the art of conversation.

When we moved into our suburban neighborhood, I expected to know my neighbors, for our kids to play with their kids, to have neighborhood BBQs and to know that if I needed something, I could call one of them, and vice versa. We’ve lived here nearly 5 years and we know one of our neighbors. One. In five years. And they live right next door. When we’re home, we like to hang out in the front yard, mow, pull weeds, play games with our kids. And the street is like a ghost town. Where is everyone? Hiding inside? In their back yards? Why do we go to such great lengths to avoid interacting with other people? Yes, you’re busy, I’m busy, the entire free world is busy. But come on, how hard is it to have a 5 minute conversation with your neighbor? Is it really crucial to pull into your garage, shut the door and not come out until the next morning? What’s inside that is so important? Jon and Kate? American Idol?

There was an ice cream social on my block tonight and I spoke maybe 7 words total, not including talking to my kids. I tried talking, but there was no interest. For example, I saw a neighbor couple with their 2 kids. We know these people relatively well, as the wife works with my husband. So I try with the wife, I get nowhere. And here is the word-for-word conversation with her husband (name changed to protect the asshole):

me: Hi Larry!

Larry: hey

me: how are you?

Larry: good (looks away)

Really? That’s the best you can do Larry? OK, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he had a shitty day. But more and more, this kind of ‘interaction’ is the rule, not the exception. Is it me? I’m beginning to think that it is me. It’s not like I am proposing key parties or trying to convert anyone to Scientology. I just want to talk.

The last post reminded me of the performance at the Grammy’s in February, where the USC marching band performed 15 Step with Thom and Jonny. Revenge of the band nerds!
